Sidelines

This semester, I started my job as a designer for the school newspaper!

My main task is to lay out pages for the monthly print version of the newspaper, but I also get the opportunity to create graphics for stories that don’t have an image to go along with them.

It’s a very behind-the-scenes position, but I enjoy it very much and love seeing my work published!

Check out MTSU Sidelines for the latest news about our campus, city and more – and if you’re near campus, be sure to pick up a copy of the print edition!

A Day in the Life – in 360!

Ever wondered what I do daily? Probably not, but here is a neat 360 video of my day anyways!

Those those unfamiliar with 360 videos – while watching the video below, click and drag on the video to see the video from different angles!

*If you’re on your phone, you have may have to open the video in the YouTube app for the 360 to work.

Please excuse the “ant” quality, I will try to fix that ASAP.

This was a fun project to make and I’m glad that I’ll have this unique video to look back on!

360 Tour of my Dorm!

For my first 360 tour, I decided to show off my dorm room – since I live on campus and am sure most classmates have already seen the rest of MTSU. I live on Greek Row, so I am fortunate to have one of the bigger rooms offered on campus. Honestly, each time I move back to school I pack fewer personal items and mainly only bring along the essentials – but I think even with just the few items I have around my dorm, my personality can be seen.

I’m not sure what went wrong, but for some reason the tour doesn’t go over to my roomie’s side of the room – even though I did take photos for it. But I’m still pretty proud of how my first attempt turned out, although I will try to come up with a better camera stand for next time. Overall, I am excited about using a 360 camera; I may even make some tours of my favorites spots in Knoxville, while I am home over spring break!

Introduction

Hey everyone!

This is my introduction for the Interactive Media Applications class I am a part of, but it can also be an interesting read for any viewers of my blog.

My name is Cleopatra Collier, most people just call me Cleo. I live in Knoxville, Tennessee with my mother and two siblings (Marc and Tigerlily). I am extremely close to my family. My mother is like a best friend, but more so since she loves me unconditionally. My brother is close to my age and also attends MTSU; he is an Apparel Design major. My sister is ten years younger than me, but we have a lot of common interests. My father lives somewhere else and mainly focuses on his church. I love hanging out with my family – whether we are going on a trip or just chilling at home, we always manage to have a good time.

Marc’s Window Display

My brother is an Apparel Design major and one of his assignments this semester was to change up the window display at our campus bookstore.

Above is the concept he came up with: a “sweater weather” theme, since his display is for mid November.

As you can see, my brother came up with the general poster design for his display – but he totally made my day when he asked if I could actually design the poster for him! Continue reading

Practicum: Media Arts Blog

During my summer break, I got an email from my favorite professor telling me that he referred me for a practicum with the chair of the Media Arts Department! I really didn’t know what to say, mainly because I wasn’t sure what a practicum was, but I knew it had to be something special. And it is!

Media Arts at MTSU

I get to write for the Media Arts Department’s website! It’s been really neat getting to discover what the other majors in my department are up to, and I’m so glad that I get to share their adventures with everyone. Oh and the chair is so nice and very insightful; I manage to learn something new every time I meet with him and I am grateful!

I’m glad I get to have to this experience, since being a content writer is one of the career paths I’d love to take.

I will be writing plenty of posts during this semester, so be sure to check out the website for more Media Arts updates!

India Night Flyer

On Thursday my house, the Global Learning Community, hosted an Indian cultural event and it was so much fun!

One of the display tables

This was our first time hosting an event like this, and for a first try I’d say it went very well. The coordinators reached out to me and some other students who marked India as a country of interest on our housing application, and I was very happy they did! Continue reading

Six Months at Yours Humanly

My LinkedIn account has let me know that I have been a Content Creator at Yours Humanly for six months now!

Yours Humanly is nonprofit organization that helps give children all around the world access to education. I was in love with their mission, as I have been fortunate enough to do some world traveling myself and have seen firsthand how education has impacted the lives of many.

When I saw their listing for a social media position it felt like a sign, as it goes so well with my major (Interactive Media) and minor (International Relations).

Black Pants Girl: Social Media Guide

This semester, I got to learn about analytics by helping a business with their social media. I worked with Black Pants Girl, a dance class company that’s all inclusive and promotes body positivity. By working with their social media accounts firsthand and by using Hootsuite, I was able to learn more about their audience and what type of posts worked the best. I also did business research and comparisons to other dance businesses to see what other techniques could be done for their accounts.

Before my time with them was done, I created a guide for them to use as a reference for their future posts. You can view that guide below!

BPG Project Proposal

I learned a lot from this experience. I am so thankful to BPG for allowing me to access their business social media accounts and for trusting my help. The thank you message I got meant so much to me!

One of my suggestions was to upload videos of dance lessons, that way the audience can get an idea of what to expect. The dance videos got a great response!

I also earned a Hootsuite Certification through this experience! This semester was an unforgettable one that I learned so much from.

Photo Booth Video Edit

My brother and his girlfriend went to a photo booth in Urban Outfitters – and the results were adorable!

A link provided with the printed photos gave access to a video of their shoot, and I loved img_2994how it showed their relationship! So I decided to personalize the video for them to make it even more special.

There was probably a way easier (and much better way) to do all of this, but I am by no means a video expert! I enjoyed the problem solving that took place in order to get the video perfect and wanted to share the process:

  1. I took a screen recording of the video
  2. I cut the video into segments and got rid of the long, awkward pauses (from when the photos were being taken) by using the Video Trim app
  3. I used the musical.ly app for the rest of the process: this app has a large library of music that you can add to your video (up to 15 seconds of song), and also has color filters and effects (such as slo-mo or speeding up the video)

*Tip: When saving a musical.ly video to your camera roll, the app will cover the last second of your video with its logo; to prevent it from taking away from the video, I added a random extra few seconds of footage to my video (using the Video Trim app) and simply cropped off the last few seconds of the video with the editing option in my camera roll!

First video:

I asked my brother what “their song” was (without giving away what I was doing), and of course his answer was “IDK” (ugh), so I went with the song “Love” by Kendrick Lamar, who is one of his favorite rappers and I sped up the video as well. He ended up saying I picked the right song and liked the video!

Second video: After sending that video to my brother, he asked if I could make a version with one of her favorite songs “Him & I” by G-Eazy and Halsey or “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” by Meghan Trainor. They also wanted to see how it’d look in black and white.

The app had three different black and white options, but I liked the “moon” one because it looked very modern to me. I did also try the video with the Meghan Trainor song, but thought it was too depressing – especially with the black and white! (PS: for more filters, upload the finished video to Instagram from your camera roll and try some of theirs)

I was very pleased with the end results and am glad that they loved them too. I feel like the two videos show each of their personalities in the relationship, which makes it even sweeter.

If anyone has any video editing apps or advice they recommend, please let me know! I am still very (very) beginner when it comes to video, but would love to get better.
